New movies 2021: what to watch in theaters this year – and which films are streaming

Everyone knows that 2020 was a disastrous year for theaters. The global pandemic forced the unprecedented closure of cinemas en masse, with major studios subsequently left with no choice but to pull movie after movie from their annual release schedules.

But in 2021, as the successful rollout of vaccines in many countries continues to provide a belated source of optimism, things are looking up for Hollywood. In fact, this year has turned out to be one of the best for film fans in living memory.

Not only will we have seen four Marvel movies released come the end of 2021 (Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home), but we've also already enjoyed the big budget action of theater-first flicks like No Time to Die and Dune.

It's not all sunshine and daisies just yet, though. Paramount has again delayed its 2022 release schedule (meaning both Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 will arrive later than anticipated), while many of Warner's movies are still launching simultaneously on HBO Max.

Still, what remains of 2021, coupled with a promising outlook for 2022, paints a refreshingly positive picture of an industry in rude health. Below, you'll find every new movie worth getting excited about over the coming months.

West Side Story

Release date: December 10, 2021 (theatrical)

The year is set to go out with a song and dance, as all eyes turn to Steven Spielberg’s first ever big screen musical. And let's be honest, the legendary director of Indiana Jones, Jaws and Saving Private Ryan couldn’t have chosen a bigger act to follow. Robert Wise's Oscar-winning 1961 movie version of the classic Bernstein and Sondheim production is undoubtedly one of the greatest screen musicals of all time, so it’ll be exciting to see what Spielberg can bring to the party.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Release date: December 17, 2021 (theatrical)

The most remarkable thing about Spider-Man: No Way Home is that it exists at all. Thankfully, rights holders Sony were able to settle a dispute with Marvel Studios that could have seen Tom Holland’s Spidey going solo, and now the Wallcrawler will continue to operate within the labyrinthine continuity of the MCU.

The mid-credits twist of Far From Home makes that particularly welcome news, having plunged Spidey into new territory when Mysterio revealed Peter Parker’s secret identity to the world. It also looks like he'll be exploring the multiverse, with several rumors suggesting that two former screen Spideys, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, are joining the action. Old villains like Electro, Doc Ock and Green Goblin are already confirmed to appear, thanks to teasers in the movie's first trailer.

The Matrix Resurrections

Release date: December 22, 2021 (US, theatrical and streaming via HBO Max and UK, theatrical)

The Matrix saga was supposed to be done and dusted after the twin disappointments of Reloaded and Revolutions, but Warner Bros. is inviting us to take the red pill once more in this unexpected follow-up. Lana Wachowski, half of the original writer/director team, is back for the reboot, along with stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. Both their characters died in the original trilogy, so we’re not sure how this movie fits in with the predecessors – the Wachowskis were secretive even before JJ Abrams and Christopher Nolan made it fashionable, so concrete information is thin on the ground. Still, in the cyber-world of The Matrix, pretty much anything should be possible, so expect to see bullet-time taken to the next level.

Confirmed to be called The Matrix Resurrections, the movie's first teaser trailer was unveiled at this year's CinemaCon event, and we've broken down 11 things we noticed.

The King's Man

Release date: December 22, 2021 (theatrical)

After the fun action of Kingsman: The Secret Service, the franchise quickly went off the rails with the overblown The Golden Circle. There's a lot riding on this third instalment, then, which may be why it's gone in such a radical new direction, heading back to World War I to show the early days of top-secret, impeccably tailored spy organization The Kingsmen. Ralph Fiennes is the M-type figure (shouldn't be too much of a stretch…) who recruits Harris Dickinson's Conrad to the club to combat an early 20th century brand of villainy. Sounds like a retro James Bond to us, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Titane

Release date: December 31, 2021 (theatrical)

BBC Culture has already described Julia Ducournau’s Titane as "the most shocking film of 2021," which has us more excited than we otherwise usually would be to see a movie about a woman with a unique attraction to cars. Titane follows Alexia (Agathe Rousselle in her feature film debut), a woman who, after being injured in a car accident as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. Ducournau wowed audiences with her 2016 debut, Raw, so we've got high hopes for this one.

Big 2022 movies

Looking further ahead, these are the big movies coming up in 2022.

Morbius

Release date: January 28, 2022 (theatrical)

Having had a monster hit with Venom in 2018, Sony plunders Spider-Man's rogues' gallery once again, with a movie focusing on one Michael Morbius. The so-called "living vampire" is a scientist who uses an experimental serum to cure a debilitating condition, and ends up turning himself into a bloodsucker.

Jared Leto, who has comic book movie form as the Joker, takes on the role of Morbius, alongside former Doctor Who star Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, a villain with the same bloodsucking affliction as the title star. Daniel Espinosa is at the helm – a remarkable piece of synergy, seeing as his 2017 movie Life was once rumored to be a Venom prequel.

The Black Phone

Release date: February 4, 2022 (theatrical)

Wow, an entirely new horror IP? Not exactly. The Black Phone will see director Scott Derrickson adapt a 2004 short story of the same name by Joe Hill, which follows the plight of a kidnapped child who communicates – through, you guessed it, a black phone – with his kidnapper’s previous victims to try and escape. Sounds like a neat premise, at least.

Death on the Nile

Release date: February 11, 2022 (theatrical)

Kenneth Branagh directs the sequel to his Murder on the Orient Express adaptation, where he returns to his role – and that impressively sculpted facial hair – as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. As in the first movie, he's taken a dazzling ensemble cast along for the ride, this time including Gal Gadot, Sex Education’s Emma Mackey and Black Panther's Letitia Wright. Don't expect any massive surprises in the plot – the story's over 80 years old – but with whodunits like this, the fun is always in watching Poirot sleuthing up a storm.

Uncharted

Release date: February 18, 2022 (theatrical)

Tom Holland stars as PlayStation-originated hero Nathan Drake in this adaptation of Naughty Dog's games, which also co-stars Mark Wahlberg. This one's been kicking around the schedules for years, and this time director Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland) is attached to make it. The games themselves were pretty cinematic, so it'll be interesting to see if this film can contribute anything new to Drake's story.

The Batman

Release date: March 4, 2022 (theatrical)

Robert Pattinson follows in the footsteps of Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck as the latest man to don the most famous cowl in cinema. Dawn of/War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves gets the keys to the Batmobile in the latest reboot of the most versatile hero in comics, and he’s promised his take on the Caped Crusader will feel “very psychological, very emotional”.

Gotham City is traditionally defined by its villains, however, and The Batman has plenty, with ZoĆ« Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. This could be a worthy successor to Christopher Nolan’s superlative Dark Knight trilogy.

Top Gun: Maverick

Release date: May 27, 2022 (theatrical)

Tom Cruise climbs back into that famous fighter jet cockpit for the first time since Top Gun made him the biggest star on the planet over three decades ago. Resurrecting the most '80s of movies in the cut and thrust of the 21st century marketplace is a gamble, even for Cruise, but the production team are doing everything they can to recapture the old magic – as well as real action with real planes, they've brought back synth legend Harold 'Axel F' Faltermeyer on music duties. Plot wise, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is still an instructor at the Top Gun school, while one of his students (played by Whiplash's Miles Teller) just happens to be the son of Mav's late co-pilot, Goose. We're still feeling the need for speed...

Jurassic World: Dominion

Release date: June 10, 2022 (theatrical)

If there’s one certainty in Hollywood, it’s that – like life – major franchises find a way. So, despite production having been halted by coronavirus restrictions in March 2020, the sixth Jurassic movie got back in front of the cameras in July of last year. The big news this time out is that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be joining forces with Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, all reprising their roles from the original Jurassic Park. But with dinosaurs now loose on American soil after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, this movie promises to be very different to its prehistoric predecessors.

We were supposed to be seeing this in June 2021, but you can fill the hole with short film Battle at Big Rock (above).

Mission: Impossible

Mission: Impossible 7

Release date: September 30, 2022 (theatrical)

Tom Cruise will have hit 60 by the time the seventh Mission: Impossible movie smashes its way into cinemas. Don’t expect him to give up his mantle as Hollywood’s leading action star anytime soon, however, as there’s still plenty of spectacular stunts for Cruise to risk life and limb for – part of the fun of the series is finding out what its leading man will dare to try next. Having delivered the long-running franchise’s best instalments with Rogue Nation and Fallout, Christopher McQuarrie is back behind the camera for part 7 and its follow-up. Plot details are currently wrapped up tighter than a government vault, but Mission: Impossible is a brand that tends to deliver.

Avatar 2

Avatar 2

Release date: December 16, 2022 (theatrical)

James Cameron is anything but prolific these days – Avatar 2 will be his third movie in 25 years – but when he does step behind the camera, you know you’ll be seeing something groundbreaking. He tends to spend the long gaps between releases waiting for filmmaking technology to catch up with his vision, so his return to the spectacular alien ecosystem of Pandora will feature world-first underwater performance capture sequences.

Kate Winslet (who held her breath for an incredible seven minutes during filming), Jemaine Clement and Cliff Curtis join the cast alongside Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang also return, despite their characters being presumed dead.

While this sequel was delayed a year as part of Disney's massive Covid-19-induced release date shake up, you won’t have to wait another decade for more Avatar – part 3 is set for December 2024, with a fourth and fifth movie also in the works.

Amazon accused of playing 'outsized' role in supply chain chaos

Amazon and a handful of other major ecommerce players have been accused of playing an “outsized” role in the pollution and congestion of US ports.

The retail giant brings in plenty of goods from China and elsewhere around the world through ports on the US West Coast, on ships that emit large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. As they burn fuel, they also release pollutants that create smog and release toxic particles into the air.

As a result, residents of the West Coast (particularly Los Angeles and Long Beach) breathe some of the worst air in all of the States, a recent report from not-for-profit Stand.earth states.

Zero-emission container ships

According to the report, Amazon, Target, Walmart and Ikea are some of America’s worst offenders in this regard. These four companies alone emit 20 million metric tons of carbon into the atmosphere, as much as all marine shipping generates in two years.

“It is past time to hold these retailers accountable for their responsibilities at the ports,” Dawny’all Heydari, a Campaign Lead at Pacific Environment, told The Verge in a statement.

“[Amazon and Target] will continue to favor West Coast routes, which means they’ll also keep clogging West Coast ports, spewing cancer-causing emissions and threatening our climate future.”

More than a fifth of the emissions studied by the two companies (21%), which is also the biggest share of all emissions, came as a result of ships moving between China and Southern California or Washington.

To tackle the issue, the report’s authors argue, retailers should accelerate their shift towards zero-emission container ships and fully migrate by 2030. The problem is, these ships do not yet exist at scale.

The Morning After: Jack Dorsey is stepping down as Twitter CEO, again

Big tech news normally slows as the year winds down, but Jack Dorsey isn’t letting that happen. The Twitter CEO has resigned from the company, with CTO Parag Agrawal replacing him as chief executive.

"I've decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders," Dorsey said in a statement.

Over the last six years, Dorsey has run two major tech companies: Twitter and Square. His first stint as CEO of Twitter, which he co-founded, ended in 2008 when he was pushed out. He returned as CEO in 2015 when Dick Costolo departed.

With Agrava at the helm, will Twitter go in a different direction? Will it chase more money-making ventures? (Advertising remains its best way of making money, but there are newsletter projects and premium membership options happening in the background — and there's also that newly created crypto division.

But for many Twitter users, the hope is the company will get a better handle on the trolls, disinformation spreaders and bullies. That might be harder to achieve than interest in a Twitter Blue subscription.

So there were some bargains waiting for Cyber Monday to strike. Adorama and B&H have discounted the base 14-inch model by $200. That’s a 10 percent discount off its usual $1,999 starting price. Amazon discounted both the 14- and 16-inch variants by $50 the week they came out. But $200 off is an all-time low — already — for a computer that only went on sale at the end of October. Alas, only the Space Grey option of this highly rated laptop is on sale, however.

Nissan will invest $18 billion in EV development over the next five years

It plans to develop 23 new electrified cars by 2030.

Nissan will invest trillions of yen over the next five years developing new EVs and battery technology as part of a grand plan it calls Ambition 2030.

This will include 23 electrified vehicles over the next eight years, with 20 of those in the next five years alone. It's aiming for a market mix of 75 percent electrified (EV and e-Power PHEV/hybrids) in Europe, 55 percent in Japan and 40 percent in the US and China by 2030.

This could even include EVs with all-solid-state batteries (ASSB) by 2028, with a pilot plant in Yokohama primed to start manufacturing as early as 2024. ASSBs promise benefits like reduced charging times and improved stability.

The UK's antitrust regulator is reportedly set to block Meta's purchase of Giphy

It would be the first Competition and Markets Authority reversal of a major tech acquisition.

According to the Financial Times, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is expected to reverse Facebook parent company Meta's purchase of Giphy. If so, it would mark the first time that the country's competition regulator has unwound a major tech acquisition.

Meta (or Facebook, at the time) announced in May 2020 that it bought the GIF platform with the goal of rolling it into Instagram. Reports pegged the price of the deal at $400 million.

The CMA raised concerns about the acquisition, however. It opened an investigation into the deal the following month. The regulator ruled in August that the deal could prevent rivals such as TikTok and Snapchat from accessing Giphy's library of GIFs. It also said the deal could remove a potential competitor to Meta in the UK advertising sector.

BMW M's second standalone model is the Concept XM plug-in hybrid

BMW M, the famous automaker's subsidiary in charge of high-performance vehicles, has introduced its second standalone model over 40 years after the M1 was first sold to the public. The new vehicle is a plug-in hybrid model called the Concept XM, and it's apparently the most powerful BMW M car to ever go into series production. It will use the company's newly developed M Hybrid drive system that combines a V8 engine with a high-performance electric motor. That will give the vehicle an all-electric range of 80km (50 miles), the capability to make 750 horsepower and to reach peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft).

In addition to being the second-ever pure M model, Concept XM is also the subsidiary's first electrified vehicle in the high-performance segment. That "points the way for the future of the M brand," the company's announcement says, which hints at more electric-powered cars in the future.

It will be the first car to sport BMW's new front-end design, as well. Based on Concept XM's images, BMW's front ends will have split headlights and near-octagonal kidney grills between them bearing the vehicle's logo. The company calls the vehicle's overall design "a highly progressive and distinctive take on BMW X," but not everyone would use those adjectives to describe it — BBC's Top Gear sounds downright disappointed with how it looks. Inside, there's a driver-focused cockpit, brown leather and BMW's curved screen for its infotainment system.

The series production version of the vehicle — the BMW XM — will start production by the end of 2022. It will be manufactured at the BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA and will be available as a plug-in hybrid model only.

Sony's PS4 phone controller patent isn't enough to get us excited for its mobile games

It's no secret that Sony is looking to push harder into mobile games in the near future, and we've been waiting to see what that actually means. Now a new patent for some mobile gaming hardware might give us our first clue.

As spotted by VideoGamesChronicle, Sony's Japanese arm was recently granted a patent for a mobile phone games controller that looks similar to the PS4 Dualshock (pictured above), except it sandwiches a smartphone.

This dual-controller smartphone gaming peripheral design is something we've seen before, notably with the Razer Kishi which has proven somewhat popular. The real difference here is how much like a PS4 controller the thing looks, and you're apparently meant to use grips like on the PS4 controller, and not just hold the side of the accessory like with the Kishi or most other mobile controllers.

This is just a patent, so a finished product might look quite different (or not come at all). With its big push into mobile gaming, it's no surprise Sony is considering hardware to work with smartphones, though a patent doesn't guarantee a physical device is coming.

However we hope Sony's big drive into smartphone gaming isn't limited to hardware, because that's not what mobile games need right now.

Analysis: it's in the software

The major thing limiting people from enjoying big-franchise games on their smartphones isn't the hardware. Phones are sometimes more powerful than laptops now, and game controller accessories have been a thing for a while – some gaming phones even have built-in triggers.

No, the real thing that stops the enjoyment of triple-A mobile games is the serious lack of actual top-end games to play.

Sure, we sometimes see popular indie titles ported over to mobile and tablet, but until we see the next Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed launch on smartphones, mobile gaming will still have a long way to go.

You might be saying 'triple-A games won't play on phones like that', but such a statement is provably false. Streaming services like Google Stadia and Amazon Luna let you stream big-title games from the internet, onto your tiny little smartphone.

The problem is that game streaming services are rather temperamental, and still require great internet connection to enjoy – you can't boot up Cyberpunk 2077 when you're on the underground or Elder Scrolls 6 when you're out in the countryside.

But it proves the mobile form factor works for traditional console games – there just needs to be a way to get them to play offline on standard smartphones. With each new year of mobiles getting more and more powerful, it'll become more and more feasible in the coming years.

We just hope Sony's pledge to focus more on mobile games results in more genuine console-like experiences, not endless-runners like Crash Bandicoot On The Run or card games like the new Wipeout.

New horror movies 2021: every big scary film coming to theaters and streamers

After the pandemic-induced chaos of 2020, this year has turned out to be a great year for movies – new horror movies, in particular. But there are plenty more to look forward to in 2021 and beyond.

In the below list, we've highlighted the most hotly-anticipated horror films worth keeping an eye out for as we move into 2022 – from returning franchises like Halloween and Jeepers Creepers to original scary flicks like Jordan Peele’s Nope.

We're updating our picks regularly with new entries and revised release dates whenever relevant, especially as studio schedules continue to shuffle without warning in light of ongoing Covid-19 regulations.

Alongside the horror movies going straight to theater screens, we've also included those hitting the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Shudder and Hulu, too. Where we’re unsure of a movie’s destination, we’ve assumed the former, and have included posters or stills where possible.

The Advent Calendar

The Advent Calendar movie

When? December 2, 2021

Where? Shudder

We all love a good Christmas movie, don't we? In Patrick Ridremont’s upcoming Shudder exclusive, a wheelchair-bound ex-dancer is given a mysterious advent calendar which isn't quite as festive as it seems. The streaming service describes this one as an “ornate and elegant French horror fantasy combining Faustian themes, European folklore and tense, chilling terror" – so yeah, maybe don't show this one to the kids?

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

When? November 24, 2021 (US), December 3, 2021 (UK)

Where? Theaters

Yes, the long-running movie franchise based on the even-longer-running videogame franchise is getting a reboot. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will see 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts marshal the survival horror carnage, with The Maze Runner's Kaya Scodelario starring as Claire Redfield. The Tomorrow People's Robbie Amell and Ant-Man and the Wasp's Hannah John-Kamen also feature. It looks a lot closer to the games than the previous movies did, which is hopefully to its benefit.

Titane

Titane movie

When? December 31, 2021

Where? Theaters

BBC Culture has already called Julia Ducournau’s Titane "the most shocking film of 2021," which has us more excited than we otherwise usually would be to see a movie about a woman with a unique attraction to cars. Titane follows Alexia (Agathe Rousselle in her feature film debut), a woman who, after being injured in a car accident as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. Ducournau wowed audiences with her 2016 debut, Raw, so we've got high hopes for this one.

Scream

Scream

When? January 14, 2022

Where? Theaters

Moving into 2022, Scream will see Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett breathe (or scream?) new life into the long-running horror franchise. Though marketed without the numerical title, the movie will be a direct sequel to 2011's Scream 4, and the first in the series not to be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015.

Morbius

Morbius

When? January 28, 2022

Where? Theaters

Marvel fans, fear not – horror cinema has not left you behind. Morbius will see Jared Leto’s titular biochemist forced to face the consequences of a blood experiment gone wrong, which infects him with a vampiric mutation. Our hopes aren’t too high for this one, but Venom fans might find something to enjoy here.

The Black Phone

The Black Phone

When? February 4, 2022

Where? Theaters

Wow, an entirely new IP? Not exactly. Sounds like a neat premise, at least.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

When? TBA, early 2022

Where? Netflix

There’s not much to go on for this one, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre is returning as a Netflix movie directed by David Blue Garcia, based on an original story co-written by Fede Ɓlvarez and Rodolfo Sayagues (both known for their work on Evil Dead and Don't Breathe). It will represent the ninth instalment in the franchise, and is intended to be a direct sequel to the 1974 original.

Jeepers Creepers: Reborn

Jeepers Creepers

A still from Jeepers Creepers, 2001 (Image credit: MGM)

When? TBA, early 2022

Where? Theaters

Another reboot – though perhaps from a less well-known horror franchise – is hitting theatres in 2022 in the form of Jeepers Creepers: Reborn. It’s being directed by Timo Vuorensola from a screenplay by Sean Michael Argo, and is intended as the first in a planned trilogy set apart from the first three movies of director Victor Salva.

Nope

Nope

When? July 22, 2022

Where? Theaters

Get Out and Us director Jordan Peele’s next movie will star Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun, and is scheduled to hit theatres in July. Do we know anything more than that? Nope. We’ve got a poster, at least, which shows… a floating cloud. Make of that what you will.

Halloween Ends

Halloween Ends

When? October 14, 2022

Where? Theaters

A direct sequel to Halloween Kills – which arrived in October 2021 – Halloween Ends will (supposedly) end the long-running franchise almost exactly a year later. We expect Michael Myers and Laurie Strode to both return, though, which begs the question: was Halloween Kills actually necessary? Expect some near-misses and (another) cliff-hanger ending.

Hellraiser

Hellraiser

A still from Hellraiser, 1987 (Image credit: Future Features)

When? TBA, 2022

Where? Hulu

One movie we didn’t expect to get a reboot in 2022 was Clive Barker’s 1987 British supernatural horror, Hellraiser. This updated version will again be based on Barker's novella, The Hellbound Heart, and its existing film adaptation, so will almost definitely see the return of Pinhead and his group of sadomasochistic beings known as the Cenobites.

Skull

Predator

A still from Predator, 1987 (Image credit: 20th Century Fox)

When? TBA, 2022

Where? Theaters

Expected to be the fifth instalment of, and prequel to, the Predator franchise, Skull will follow the creature's first journey to Earth. 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg has signed on to direct, while Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers and Dane DiLiegro are all confirmed to star. No Arnie, though, unfortunately.

Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise

When? TBA, 2022

Where? Theaters, HBO Max

One more reboot? Sure, why not. Evil Dead Rise will become the fifth instalment in the Evil Dead franchise, and will follow two sisters trying to survive and save their family from demonic creatures. Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher and Mia Challis are all confirmed to star, while Spider-Man director Sam Raimi will serve as executive producer alongside Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin.

Multi-platform spyware tracks users across Windows and Android

While investigating an ongoing malware campaign, cybersecurity researchers have discovered new spyware with variants that work on both Android devices and Windows computers.

Named Chinotto, the malware was discovered by researchers at Kaspersky, who believe it is being used by a state-sponsored threat actor known as ScarCraft to keep tabs on North Korean defectors, journalists who cover North Korea-related news, and others.

“The actor utilized three types of malware with similar functionalities: versions implemented in PowerShell, Windows executables and Android applications….Therefore, the malware operators can control the whole malware family through one set of command and control scripts,” note the researchers.

TechRadar needs you!

We're looking at how our readers use VPNs with streaming sites like Netflix so we can improve our content and offer better advice. This survey won't take more than 60 seconds of your time, and we'd hugely appreciate if you'd share your experiences with us.

The investigations revealed that the threat actor distributed the malware through a spear-phishing attack, which they perpetrated after compromising acquaintances of the victim using stolen social media or email credentials.

Potent spy

The investigations revealed that, while the current campaign began some time in March 2021, there were several older variants of the malware dating back to mid-2020.

After compromising a host, the threat actors unleashed multiple malware strains to gain control over the host. Interestingly, in one instance, they waited a good six months after compromising a host before deploying Chinotto.

Based on their analysis of Chinotto, the researchers believe that it not only enables attackers to spy on their victims via screenshots, but can also give them the ability to control the compromised devices, open a backdoor to exfiltrate data, and install additional malware.

Furthermore, the investigation revealed that the attackers fiddle around with the capabilities of the malware in what appears to be an attempt to thwart traditional signature-based detection.

Game is live with a PS5 restock right now - consoles and bundles available

We may be completely out of energy after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but Game is about to end this year's sales event with one last hurrah - a PS5 restock is now live.

The specialist retailer has a number of PS5 consoles and bundles available to buy right now. From what we've seen with previous restocks, expect the consoles to go first but there should be a good opportunity to pick up a bundle if that suits your budget. Options include games such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Ghosts of Tsushima and many different accessories.

You can follow the link below to see which bundles will be up for grabs. You will probably be put in a queue at this point so best of luck!

Game confirmed that another PS5 restock was on the way on Twitter this morning. The message only mentions PS5 consoles (they usually clarify when the Digital Edition will be in stock, too) so that's all you can expect this morning.

Even though the restock has been live for a while, the queue is still ongoing so you should still be able to buy a PS5 if you get in now. Even if you find yourself in the queue for more than half an hour, there's still a good chance of coming away with a PS5. Don't be too disheartened if you miss out during this early window as there is usually a second drop in the afternoon for any cancelled orders.

Even a year after the PS5 launch, each restock still sells out in a matter of minutes. Still, Game has been one of the better places to get a console with regular drops, a queuing system and anti-scalping measures such as limiting the purchase of a PS5 to one per customer.

PS5 restock at Game

PS5 restock: consoles from £449.99 at Game
PS5 Disc consoles and bundles are available today at Game. Our advice is to go for a bundle to give yourself the best chance to get a PS5 and remain patient if you are put in a queue as stock has been available for close to an hour in previous drops at Game.

Based on the current information out there, this is likely one of your best opportunities to get a PS5 before the end of the year. A couple more stores such as Very and Amazon could hold another restock in December, but it's definitely getting close to the wire before Christmas.

If you do miss out on Game's latest PS5 restock or simply want to know where to buy the PS5 quickly, you can always check the links to buy a PS5 at various retailers below, including the PS5 Digital Edition. Keep checking these as more consoles will hit the shelves throughout 2022. Whatever you do, we'd recommend not paying over the odds to scalpers as Sony is committed to delivering 10 million PS5s this year. That means, sooner or later, supply will comfortably meet demand.

Not after the PS5? You can always keep up to date with the latest on where to buy the Xbox Series X and where to buy the Nintendo Switch OLED right here as well. Both consoles are definitely going to be heavily in demand in the weeks ahead.

Sonos could launch a mini subwoofer to boost your home cinema very soon

It looks like Sonos could be about to release a new subwoofer, after a Reddit user spotted details of the so-called Sub Mini in the brand's S2 app.

The user posted the details of the subwoofer appeared when they tapped the 'More information' button when adding a second Sub (Gen 3) – the brand's flagship subwoofer – to their Sonos system. They also uploaded a screenshot of the information screen.

As well as providing information on how to connect a second subwoofer to your home cinema setup, the page also revealed that the Sonos Sub Mini isn't supported in this process.

Currently, the company doesn't have any products with this name, which suggests that a launch is on the horizon – and perhaps coming very soon, if details of the new subwoofer are already available in the Sonos S2 app.

In a statement provided to Engadget, a Sonos spokesperson said that "we’re always working on ways to create an even better listening experience for customers, but we don’t have anything to share on our future product roadmap"; however we'd be surprised if the Sonos Sub Mini didn't launch in the next few months.

The page also reveals a little about the design of the Sub Mini, under a section titled 'How do I know if I have a Sub (Gen 3)?'. Apparently, the new subwoofer is "a smaller, cylindrical subwoofer" compared to the brand's existing lineup of relatively large, square devices.

A cheaper Sonos subwoofer? Count us in

Subwoofers like the Sonos Sub are a great way to boost the bass frequencies of your home cinema setup – especially if you have a smaller soundbar like the Sonos Beam (Gen 2), which doesn't sound as powerful as bigger models.

Even if your soundbar is loud enough, a good subwoofer can add tension to movie soundtracks by enhancing the rumbling lowest frequencies, as well as making bass-heavy music sound more full-bodied.

However, subwoofers don't always come cheap – and that's especially true of the Sonos Sub, which costs $749 / £749 / AU$1,099. If the new Sub Mini is a smaller version of the brand's existing subwoofers, it should be cheaper than this – is the same way the Sonos Beam is cheaper than its larger sibling, the Sonos Arc

Sonos pricing has been a point of contention in recent months. Back in September the company increased the prices of its wireless speakers and soundbars in what was seen as an unusal and surprising move.

The Sonos Black Friday deals were particularly disappointing this year, too. There were very few discounts, even as we moved through Cyber Monday – perhaps as a result of the global chip shortages that been hitting the AV industry hard, affecting both stock and delivery times.

In any case, a cheaper version of a Sonos product is always welcome – and even if Sonos is yet to confirm it, it looks like we'll be seeing a cheaper, more compact subwoofer in the next few months.

UK competition regulator orders Meta to sell Giphy

As rumored, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has ordered Meta (Facebook) to sell Giphy, saying the deal "could harm social media users and UK advertisers." It found that the deal would boost Meta's already prodigious market power by limiting other platforms' access to Giphy GIFs, "driving more traffic to Facebook owned sites — Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram."

The CMA said that Meta's sites dominated social media user time to the tune of 73 percent and that it could further muscle out rivals like TikTok, Twitter and Snapchat by leveraging Giphy. It added that prior to the merger, Giphy launched "innovative advertising services" used by brands like Dunkin' Donuts and Pepsi that it could have brought to the UK.

"Facebook terminated Giphy’s advertising services at the time of the merger, removing an important source of potential competition," the regulator wrote. "The CMA considers this particularly concerning given that Facebook controls nearly half of the £7 billion display advertising market in the UK."

We disagree with this decision. We are reviewing the decision and considering all options, including appeal.

Facebook purchased Giphy in May of 2020, reportedly for $400 million, with the aim of integrating it into Instagram. A month later, the CMA launched an investigation into the deal and ruled in August that Facebook could stop rivals like TikTok and Snapchat from accessing Giphy's GIF library. At the same time, it said the deal could remove potential UK display advertising competitors after Meta ended Giphy's paid ad partnerships.

Meta previously said that the CMA had no jurisdiction because Giphy has no operations in the UK, adding that Giphy's paid services weren't display advertising by the CMA's definition. In October, the authority fined Meta $70 million for breaking rules related to the deal by refusing to report required information and changing its chief compliance officer twice without permission.

The CMA said that after consulting with interested businesses and organizations, it "has concluded that its competition concerns can only be addressed by Facebook selling Giphy in its entirety to an approved buyer." It's not clear how this would be done, however.

"We disagree with this decision. We are reviewing the decision and considering all options, including appeal. Both consumers and Giphy are better off with the support of our infrastructure, talent, and resource," a Meta spokesperson told Engadget in a statement. "Together, Meta and Giphy would enhance Giphy’s product for the millions of people, businesses, developers and API partners in the UK and around the world who use Giphy every day, providing more choices for everyone."

O2 offers free SIMs and data to Big Issue vendors to enable cashless payments

O2 is offering free SIM cards to Big Issue vendors as part of its National Databank intiaitve, hoping to address the challenges of digital poverty and enable contactless payments.

The Big Issue was founded three decades ago as a non-profit organisation that allows people living in poverty to earn an income by selling a magazine to the public. There are currently 1,500 vendors and the magazine sells 83,073 copies each week, generating £5.5 million for the people that sell it.

O2 will offer 7GB of data, along with unlimited calls and texts, to ensure vendors are not excluded from the digital society and economy, and to allow them to take cashless payment using a reader that connects to a mobile network.

Virgin Media O2 national databank

Big Issue says that since vendors started accepting cashless payments in 2019, some have seen sales increase by a third. Having a mobile phone also has other benefits, such as reducing the impact of digital poverty and improving mental health.

“We are incredibly excited about this partnership. Not only does it mean our vendors will be able to boost their sales, but it also means they will be able to stay connected to their loved ones this Christmas,” said Russell Blackman, Commercial MD at The Big Issue.

“Whilst in 2019 we started to help ensure our vendors were connected, there are still many who need access. This partnership will ensure even more of our vendors are no longer left behind.”

“I can have a card reader, which increases my sales, but I need a mobile phone for that. I can now ring The Big Issue office when I need to, I can do banking on my phone,” added Rodney Lyall, a Big Issue vendor based in Bournemouth. “When I check my balance, I know how many magazines I can afford to buy that day. And my family are in Newcastle and I’m in Bournemouth, so being able to stay in touch when we’re so far apart has benefits for my mental health and wellbeing. You feel part of things.”

Virgin Media O2’s National databank intends to be like a ‘food bank’ for mobile data in acknowledgement that connectivity is not a luxury but an essential part of modern life. As society increasingly becomes digitised, Internet access is essential for education, work and access public services and anyone who remains offline is put at a disadvantage.

The company has pledged to get more than 255,000 people living in poverty connected by the end of 2023.

Where to buy PS5: all the retailers to check for the Sony console

If you're still wondering where to buy a PS5 you're not alone. Those looking to make the most of the next generation are still hunting for those all-important PS5 consoles, but knowing where to focus your search can make all the difference. We're here to bring you all the latest info on this page with regular updates throughout the week.

Latest: Across the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, Walmart, GameStop and Amazon all held PS5 restocks in the US. Two of those came out of the blue, while Walmart gave us a good heads up and time to prepare - hopefully, you were successful. Meanwhile, Game in the UK has put PS5 consoles and bundles up for sale today (November 30). Restocks might slow down now as we reach Christmas, but we'll update this page if we hear anything new.

We've seen more regular drops at certain retailers, like Best Buy and Walmart in the US, and Very and Game in the UK, but you'll find all the retailers that have offered the chance to buy PS5 recently just below.

We're hoping there will be more consoles in stock as part of this year's Cyber Monday deals but it's going to be one of the year's hottest items so competition will be tough. If you're lucky enough to secure a console, do keep an eye on our guide to all the best PS5 Cyber Monday deals so you can snag a bargain on some games or accessories in November. You can also still get the best price for PS Plus thanks to the current deal over the Black Friday sales period.

If you're getting desperate to buy PS5, it can be tempting to head over to a reseller site. However, even though stock can be snapped up quickly it's not impossible to get your hands on the next-gen console. We'd recommend staying well clear of these price hiked sites and instead sticking with retailers you know and trust.

where to buy PS5

Where to buy PS5 in the US

The US stores below carry PS5 and Digital Edition consoles regularly. We update this list as soon as we get news of an upcoming restock with the announced (or rumoured) time and date so you can be best prepared to bag a console.

Where to buy PS5: which US retailers have stock?

Amazon
Amazon has had PS5 stock spring up intermittently since pre-orders opened, but each time it flies off the shelves in a heartbeat. It's worth keeping an eye on Amazon though, as we expect it'll get more stock in the near future - plus you can grab fast, free delivery if you're a Prime member as well.

Best Buy
Best Buy has been one of the more regular stores when it comes to restocking the PS5. This makes it one of the best places to buy a PS5. Keep an eye out, then, because more units could arrive any time.

Newegg
Newegg had a brief amount of PS5 stock on launch day but it quickly sold out. We're expecting more stock could become available in the next waves so stay tuned for more updates.

GameStop
We've seen the chance to buy PS5 popping up a fair bit at Gamestop over the past few months, so it's worth keeping an eye on the retailer as new stock could land at any time. GameStop also offers bundles with all the accessories and games included (for their regular prices) to dissuade scalpers, and it's these bundles we usually see sticking in stock a little longer.

Walmart
Walmart has seen a fair few PS5 restocks over the last month, however, things seem to have settled down now. Where previously we would have seen a new date for stock, the PS5 is now listed as out of stock.

Where to buy PS5

Where to buy PS5 in the UK

Check the quick links below to find out where to buy PS5 in the UK today. With PS5 stock regularly hitting the country at least every couple of weeks, your chances of getting a console have increased considerably as of late.

Where to buy PS5: the UK retailers to follow

Amazon
When more PS5 stock drops, it will likely do so at Amazon, which means you'll want to be one of the first in line when it does. As a massive online retailer, Amazon may well have more stock to play with so we'll keep this link here in case more consoles go live soon.

Very
Very has also offered the chance to buy PS5, though stock on the individual console shifted within seconds. We've seen inventory sticking around a lot longer when paired with full-priced accessories, however, and Very regularly refreshed its stock over the Xbox launch day and console pre-order period. Definitely keep checking in with this one then.

Currys
Between early glitches allowing some to purchase the PS5 early, site crashes, and a delay in their promised launch times, the retailer has now conceded and stated that no more consoles will be available. We'd keep checking back, however.

Game
Game will have a selection of PS5 consoles and bundles to buy on October 28. This will include both the standard and digital editions. Expect the site to update at anytime between 9-11am when a queue system will be in place to manage traffic.

Where to buy PS5 in Australia

Amazon AU

When more PS5 stock drops, it will likely do so at Amazon, which means you'll want to be one of the first in line when it does. As a massive online retailer, Amazon may well have more stock to play with so we'll keep this link here in case more consoles go live soon.

The Gamesmen

Like most Aussie retailers, The Gamesmen is experiencing a drought of sorts when it comes to PS5 stock. That said, we will absolutely keep you informed as soon as stock of Sony's latest powerhouse console becomes available.

Target

While Target does not currently have PlayStation 5 stock on hand, the retailer does note on its website that it expects more stock soon, and to "Please check this page for release timing updates." It's also worth noting that the retailer will only be selling PS5 stock on its website, and will not be available for in-store purchase.

EB Games

While EB Games was one of the first retailers to sell out, they also offered 2021 pre-orders of the console for quite a while, but even those appear to be currently out of stock. Yet again, this doesn't mean there won't be any more chances today to score a PS5, so keep checking in with them to try your chances.

JB Hi-Fi

JB Hi-Fi Australia – one of the country's largest tech retail outlets – is in the same boat as many, with the PS5 currently out of stock. With that said, stock seems to fluctuate regularly, so keep checking in to see if you can score a console.

Sony Online

As with most places, even Sony itself is out of stock currently. It's just as good an option as other retailers in terms of price (full RRP) and free shipping, but you'll need to keep checking back in for when they get more stock.

Where to buy PS5: FAQs

It's not easy to buy PS5 today, so you'll find answers to some of the top questions many shoppers have right now just below.

How to buy PS5: top tips

1. Find your retailers
The list above will keep you on top of all the latest PS5 stock updates as soon as they come in, but you should keep checking frequently as you never know when more stock will land and you might get lucky.

2. Prepare your wallet
You're likely already steeled against the PS5 price, but you'll want to make sure your retailers know that. Prepare your card and shipping details in a separate page or store them with your retailers of choice for a faster checkout.

3. Sign in
You may already have an account with your favorite retailers, but be sure to sign in ahead of stock. This will steal valuable seconds from your order at checkout and you'll need all the time you can get to buy PS5 today. Plus, you can often save your checkout details with your login (if you're comfortable doing this) and track your order a little easier. We'd recommend making accounts for each retailer offering PS5 stock today as well.

4. Find the product page
You don't want to be left navigating the virtual aisles when the chance to buy PS5 does arrive. We'll be linking straight out to product pages here when stock does land, but if you're going it alone be sure to have the relevant pages queued up for your search.

5. Don't give up
There's likely to be more chances to buy a PS5 in the near future, though you'll need to be quick. If you come up unlucky, however, keep refreshing the retailer's page - we've seen stock return for quickfire refreshes in a matter of minutes in the past so you don't want to give up at the first hurdle.

When will you be able to buy PS5?

The PS5 is currently out of stock at most retailers but PS5 restocks have been popping up over the last few weeks, with the Sony Direct queue and Target offering more chances to buy PS5 in the US and over in the UK rumors are spinning of a massive PS5 restock hitting over January.

We'll keep you update when and where you can get your hands on PS5 stock as soon as it becomes available.

Will there be more chances to buy PS5?

If you've missed out on PS5 stock until now, don't panic. It's likely retailers will offer up more chances to buy PS5 in the near future. These opportunities will all be equally competitive, however, so you'll want to stay tuned for the latest updates right here.

Should you buy PS5 today?

With stock looking low and delivery dates being pushed back, it's worth wondering if you need to buy PS5 today. In general, we would say that the earlier you can get your hands on Sony's next-generation console the better. We don't know what stock is going to look like for the next few months so the sooner your delivery date (however delayed that might be from today) the better.

However, if you're after bundle deals and can hold off, you might want to think about buying PS5 when stock settles down further into the new year.

What is the PS5 price?

The PS5 price is $499 (£449 / AU$749.95). That puts it at the same price point as the Xbox Series X, but that shouldn't come as a surprise to many, seeing as it's difficult to imagine the PS5 price exceeding $500 when it's up against the affordable spread put out by Microsoft.

However, the cheaper PS5 Digital Edition price is $399.99 (£359.99 / AU$599.95), which does flag some concerns considering the Xbox Series S's $299 price tag. However, the PS5 Digital Edition will run the same specs as the fully-fledged console, further cementing its position in the market as a high value for money option.

That means bargain hunters can still experience everything the PS5 has to offer while foregoing the opportunity to play physical PS4 and PS5 games or save cash by buying in the second-hand market. It's an excellent proposition that will certainly capture those going for sheer value for money at launch.

Should you buy PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition?

You can buy one of two version of the PS5 today - the standard disk version, or the Digital Edition. The former allows you to play your physical PS4 and PS5 games, however you can still access your downloaded PS4 titles on the Digital Edition as well.

The cheaper £359 PS5 Digital Edition doesn't have a disk drive, but still runs the same specs as the full fat console. That means you can buy PS5 for less today and you'll still be running the latest tech from Sony.

However, there's only 825GB in this SSD and that's going to fill up quickly, provided you don't grab an external HDD for your PS4 games. If you've got a substantial physical collection already then it might be worth upgrading to the main console.

That said, it's difficult to buy PS5 either way right now, with launch seeing an incredibly limited number of consoles hitting the shelves. While we wouldn't necessarily advise settling for the console you can get (there's going to be more chances to buy PS5 in the future, and it's a lot of cash to be taking second best with), if you're set on buying PS5 today you might have to take what you find.
