Best cordless vacuum 2021: ranking the top stick vacuums for pet hair and hardwood floors we’ve tested

The best cordless vacuum cleaners put an end to being restrained by a wire, thanks to powerful, and in some cases long-lasting lithium batteries, you can zip through your whole home, with the same, if not more suction power than traditional corded vacuum cleaners. In fact, some of these stick vacuums, as they’re also known, are so impressive they've even made it into our list of the best vacuum cleaners

Just what makes the best cordless hoovers (the colloquial term for vacuum cleaners used because Hoover was one of the first manufacturers of the floor cleaning devices)? As well as exceptional dust pick-up on carpet and hard floor, a long-lasting battery is a must, so you can clean your entire home without interruptions because the battery has died. The long-lasting cordless vacuums, such as Dyson and Miele, offer around 60 minutes runtime, although it’s worth noting this is on the lowest power setting. Increasing the suction will reduce the battery life.

It’s also worth looking for a lightweight design and a dust canister with a large capacity, along with easy maneuverability and the ability to reach under furniture, to ensure you clean every inch of your floors. An arsenal of tools is an added bonus for all cordless vacuum owners, as they make it easier to clean upholstery and up-high as well as the floors, while pet owners should look for attachments dedicated to removing animal as well as human hair.

There’s plenty of choice when it comes to the best cordless vacuums; from floor cleaning stalwarts Dyson and Miele to less experienced but no less capable brands like Shark and Roidmi. We’ve put some of the top models to the test to find out which really are the best cordless vacuums you can buy right now.

The best cordless vacuums 2021: ranked

Dyson V15 Detect

1. Dyson V15 Detect Absolute

The Absolute best cordless vacuum you can buy

Powerful suction
Laser highlights microscopic dust on hard floors
Informative LCD screen
Expensive
Average-sized dust canister

Is this the perfect cordless vacuum cleaner?  In our eyes, it  very nearly could be. Not only is Dyson's latest launch more powerful than its best-in-class predecessor, the V11 Absolute, it also cleans better on all surfaces, but where it really shines is the inclusion of a laser on its hard-floor head that highlights microscopic dust invisible to the human eye.

It also ships with the High Torque cleaning head, which can be used on all floor types, and just like the Dyson V11 range, will automatically adjust the suction level to suit the floor type its cleaning if used on Auto Mode. Although, it's been given a slight upgrade too - in the form of 56 polycarbonate teeth that will shred hair so it doesn't get stuck around the brush bar. It's got the same LCD screen found on the V11 range too, but rather than just offering up the remaining tun-time and where blockages are located, it will now detail the amount and types of dust collected - evidence of just how thoroughly your home has been cleaned

A smidge heavier than its predecessor, now tipping our scales just over the 3kg mark and the average-sized dust canister are small niggles on an otherwise excellent cleaner. The V15 Detect Absolute doesn't come cheap, but with the same list price as the V11 Absolute, we think it’s worth the money if you want simply the best cordless vacuum cleaner available today.

Roidmi R10 cordless vacuum

2. Roidmi R10

The best affordable cordless vacuum

Weight:: 2.4kg | Bin size:: 0.4L | Runtime: : Up to 40 minute

Super lightweight
Quiet
Sleek Design
Suction could be stronger

While the Roidmi R10, which has previously been called the Roidmi S1E, doesn’t match the Dyson on suction power or run-time, at a fraction of the price it's a worthy entrant in our line-up of the best cordless vacuums. Easy to carry and use in both stick cleaner or handheld mode, this lightweight cordless vacuum excels when it comes to noise too. Even though its decibel levels are similar to other cordless vacuums, we found the tone was softer making it easy to chat while cleaning without the need to shout.

With six design awards under its belt, the Roidmi R10 ticks the style and substance boxes. There’s a good selection of tools too, including a motorized mattress brush that makes light work of upholstery cleaning.

The battery lasts for 40-minutes on standard power or 10 minutes of super suction if needed, which can’t quite match some competitors but considering the affordable price tag is a compromise we’re willing to make. The suction also could be stronger, on full power it wasn’t quite the oomph needed for deep-cleaning carpets, but it’s still a great everyday floor care option.

Miele Triflex HX1 Cordless vacuum

3. Miele Triflex HX1 Cat & Dog review

The best cordless vacuum for pet hair

Power supply: Cordless | Weight: 4kg | Bin size:: 0.5L | Run time: Up to 60 minutes

Powerful suction
Can be used as a stick vacuum or a handheld cleaner
Swappable battery means fewer interruptions to your cleaning
Expensive
Heavy to use as a handheld cleaner

Miele’s first-ever cordless vacuum cleaner is, in our eyes, one of the best vacuum cleaners you can buy right now. It offers extremely powerful suction and has a similar floor-sensing cleaning head, which will automatically adjust the speed of the brush bar for a deep clean on carpets, to the Dyson V11 Absolute and the Dyson V15 Detect (above).

However, it differs from Dyson's rival vacuum cleaner, as it can be converted into a cordless upright cleaner by moving the main unit closer to the cleaner head. Not only does it mean the vacuum can be left free-standing rather than having to be lent against a wall or piece of furniture, but it’s also easier to maneuver but it did struggle to get under some furniture in this mode.

The battery lasted 60 minutes between charges on the lowest power setting - although this reduced to 16 minutes when we ran it on the highest power setting. We like that the battery is removable, so you can swap it with a fully charged one if you’ve purchased an additional battery, to ensure your cleaning session isn’t interrupted. At 4kg this is one of the heavier vacuum cleaners we’ve tested and it is expensive, but we think it’s worth it.

Dyson Omni-glide cordless vacuum

4. Dyson Omni-glide

The best cordless vacuum for hard floors

Power supply: Cordless | Weight: 1.9kg | Bin size: 0.02L | Run-time: Up to 20 minutes

Powerful suction
Easy to maneuver into small spaces
Compact and lightweight
Only suitable for hard floors
Expensive

The Omni-glide is a new type of cordless vacuum cleaner from Dyson - designed for hard floors, it can be laid completely flat meaning it can easily clean under low-lying furniture. It may be expensive, even though it’s one of Dyson’s more affordable cordless cleaners, but it offers powerful suction and is extremely versatile, in our eyes making it worth the hefty price tag.

The cleaning head has two soft brush bars so it won’t damage hard floors while gliding across them, and the double brush bars means it can cover a large surface area in one sweep, speeding up your vacuuming session. On top of that, four 360-degree castors and an articulating neck mean it’s easy to maneuver the vacuum in any direction.

It’s the second recently released vacuum from Dyson, the other being the V15 Detect (above) but it certainly doesn’t trail behind when it comes to suction power. On test, it collected everything from fine dust and biscuit crumbs to large debris such as cereal. Our biggest gripe is the vertical handles, which while ensures the vacuum cleaner can lay flat, is also cumbersome to hold when the vacuum is used as a handheld cleaner.

The Omi-glide is powered by a swappable battery, which lasts up to 20 minutes between charges, so it’s worth noting you will need to regularly recharge this cleaner. It’s a good buy if you’re looking for a compact, lightweight cleaner and only have hard floors in your home.

Dyson V11 Outsize cordless vacuum

5. Dyson V11 outsize

The best cordless vacuum for large homes

Weight:: 3.5kg | Bin size:: 1.9L | Run time: Up to 60 minutes

Covers more ground
Much larger bin
Helpful LCD screen
Quite heavy
Very expensive

For those with bigger homes, the Dyson V11 outsize combines everything that’s great about the Dyson V11 Absolute with a larger dust bin and wider cleaning head, to ensure you don’t have to abandon cleaning half way through to empty the vacuum cleaner.

Just as powerful as its smaller sibling, we were impressed that the Dyson V11 outsize sucked everything from discarded biscuit crumbs and ground-in dirt to cereal and cat biscuits. The stiff nylon bristles of the brush bar, which spins up to 60 times a second, are great at removing ground-in dirt from carpets. There are three power settings, which you can switch between manually, or use the Auto Mode couples with the High Torque cleaner head and let the vacuum cleaner decide how much power you need based on the floor type you’re cleaning.  It’s got the same color LCD display that displays the remaining run-time, and if any blockages; where they are, and how to clear them.

The 1.9-liter bin is 150% bigger than the dust bin on the V11 Absolute and the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute but you’ll still only get 60 minutes maximum run-time, and the vacuum cleaner is considerably more expensive too. But it could be worth the extra investment if it means your floor cleaning isn’t interrupted.

Lupe Pure Cordless vacuum

6. Lupe Pure Cordless Vacuum cleaner

The best cordless vacuum from former Dyson engineers

Power supply: Cordless | Weight: 4.6Kg | Bin size: 1L | Run time: Up to 60 minutes

Can be used as a stick vacuum or handheld cleaner
Large 0.2 gallon/1-liter dust canister means fewer interruptions to cleaning
Swappable batteries let you keep cleaning for longer
Not the most stylish of designs
Bulky compared to other cordless vacuums
Handheld mode requires two hands

Founded by two former Dyson engineers, Lupe Technology is a relative newcomer to the vacuum cleaner market, but its first cordless vacuum offers plenty of powerful suction. In our tests, it whipped away fine dust, biscuit crumbs, and cereal with ease, giving ex-employer Dyson and rivals like Miele, a run for their money.  Although, when using the most powerful setting, we found the suction was so strong the vacuum became a little more difficult to maneuver on hard floors.

The 3-in-1 vacuum can be used as an upright cordless vacuum with either the cleaner head or a one-meter extension hose. It can also be converted into a lightweight, portable vacuum for cleaning stairs or up high, by detaching the main body from the main tube and floor head assembly.

The battery lasted just under 60 minutes in our tests when used on the lowest power setting, and it can be swapped out for a fully-recharge battery (if you purchase one) if one charge isn’t enough for you to clean your whole home. The vacuum cleaner is one of the loudest we’ve tested, emitting a noise that’s equivalent to a diesel truck traveling at 40mph and it’s expensive too, but it certainly makes cleaning your floors a breeze.

Shark WandVac cordless vacuum

7. Shark WandVac

The best cordless vacuum for small spills

Power supply: Cordless | Weight: 3kg | Bin size: 0.25L | Run-time: 16 minutes

Lightweight
Strong suction
Easy to empty
Noisy
Short battery life
Small dust cup

If you're happy with your current wired vacuum cleaner, but want a cordless cleaner that's close to hand to clear up recently created, small amounts mess like cookie crumbs, then consider the Shark WandVac.

The cordless vacuum sucked up fine dust and small amounts with easy, although we found larger quantities of debris required a few sweeps back and forth. The Shark WandVac is loud in use, too.

That said, the simplistic and lightweight stick vacuum comes with silicone ‘Powerfins’, rather than conventional bristles in its cleaning head, to prevent pet or human hair from getting stuck. It can also be converted into a handheld cleaner and used with the crevice tool or fluffy brush head for upholstery or up-high dust-busting.

Don't expect the battery to last as long as more expensive rivals, such as the Dyson V15 Detect above, but for clearing up small spills, it's more than ample.

Hoover H-free 800 cordless vacuum

8. Hoover H-Free 800

The best high-tech cordless vacuum

Weight: 3kg | Bin size: 0.7L | Run time: Up to 65 minutes

Great app control
Powerful turbo mode
Difficult to set up the app-
Edge cleaning isn't great

Not only is this cordless vacuum excellent at cleaning pet hairs from rugs and dry spills from tiles, but it’s also a high-tech choice that comes with an app to let you know when the bin needs emptying and provides the battery level too. It’ll even keep track the calories you've burned while cleaning.

It doesn’t quite manage the deep cleaning we’ve seen on the very best cordless models, but with three cleaning modes and a collection of eight different tools, it’s certainly versatile.

It's nicely lightweight and the super-powerful turbo mode doesn’t disappoint, although the run-time is relatively short in this mode. The H-Free 800 is an excellent all-round cleaner for a decent price.

Dyson Cyclone V10 cordless vacuum

9. Dyson Cyclone V10

The best Dyson cordless vacuum for affordability

Weight: 2.6kg | Bin size: 0.75L | Run time: Up to 60 minutes

Unrivaled design
Powerful suction
Battery drains fast on highest setting
Expensive

The predecessor to Dyson’s V11 range, the Dyson V10 cyclone offers impressive cleaning power but at a slightly more affordable price, although not quite as competitive as other models on the market. In fact, Dyson was so confident about the performance of its cordless vacuums when it launched the V10 Cyclone that at the same time it announced it would no longer be building corded vacuum cleaners.

It’s on par with the V11 when it comes to cleaning performance. We found on carpets and hard floors it did a sterling job of sucking up fine dust, pet hair, and even larger debris such as cereal and cat litter. It’s got the same size dust bin and matches the V11 on an up-to 60-minute runtime, though do be aware that if you push it to its most powerful suction settings that figure drops dramatically. At full power, it doesn’t last quite as long as the V11 either, and it doesn’t have the ability to automatically adjust the suction power to suit the floor type you’re cleaning. There’s no LCD display either, but it is lighter and cheaper.

Shark Anti Hair Wrap Flexology cordless vacuum IZ201

10. Shark Anti Hair Wrap Flexology IZ201

The best Shark cordless vacuum for sucking up hair

Weight: : 4.1kg | Bin size: : 0.4L | Run time: Up to 40 minutes

Flexible for reaching under furniture
Powerful suction
Handy trigger for boost mode
Heavier than some competition
Can't turn off the LED headlights

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is superb, but it's also superbly expensive. If you're after something a little less extravagant, but just as well served in the sucking stakes, consider the Shark Anti Hair Wrap Flexology IZ201UK cordless vacuum cleaner instead.

A smidge cheaper than the Dyson V10, you can often pick-up Shark’s cordless vacuum for 30% less than the list price, making it a comparable option. It can only run for 40 minutes on a single charge compared to Dyson’s 60 minutes, but there is the option to purchase a version with two batteries for easy switching when you run out of battery

The brush-roller features Anti Hair Wrap technology that prevents hair from getting tangled up, so you no longer have to spend hours picking out the strands yourself, and the main ‘stick’ of the cordless vacuum is bendable which makes it much easier to clean under furniture and in tight spaces. It also comes with three additional tools

Gtech AirRam MK2 cordless vacuum

11. Gtech AirRam MK2

The best cordless vacuum from Gtech

Bin size: 0.8L | Weight: 3.5kg | Battery: 40 minutes

Lightweight, easy to carry and move
Easily accessible bin
Bin is small
No attachment tools

"AirRam" sounds almost like too cool a name for a white goods product – it could be a special move in Street Fighter or something like that. But the Gtech AirRam MK2 backs it up with respectable sucking action, and at a palatable price point too.

Designed like an upright, you'll get about 40 minutes out of the AirRam MK2 per charge, giving the Dyson V8 Absolute a run for its money. It'll run off a mains power supply too, though don't expect to go very far with the short cable that's supplied.

Gtech Airlock technology adapts the head for different flooring types which guarantees a good suction seal whether tackling carpet or hardwoods, while a removable cylinder bin lets you easily dispose of any collected grime.

But though it's not too heavy, the lack of a hose or different attachments makes it less versatile than some of the other products on this list. Still, it gets the job done, and at a far more affordable price than the competition to boot.

How we test cordless vacuum cleaners

To find the best cordless vacuum cleaner, we evaluate how successfully each model collects everything from fine dust and dirt to larger debris such as cookie crumbs and cereal. As well as assessing how well floors are cleaned, we’ve also compared how easy the vacuum cleaners are to maneuver on carpet and hard floors, as well as whether dust pick up is evenly distributed across the cleaning head, or concentrated in one area.

We rated each design on how durable it is, as well as simplicity of emptying, how loud it is during use and how long the battery lasts. For each model we wanted to know whether it was easy to convert into other modes; such as a handheld vac, the useful tools and accessories it came with to clean edges or remove pet hair, and that it didn’t require reading a thick instruction manual before use.

How often should you vacuum?

Knowing how often you should vacuum may seem obvious because, for many, it’s simply when the floors look dirty or when it’s cleaning day in your home. However, it all depends on the types of flooring you have. If you have carpeted floors, these may need vacuuming just once a week but hard floors, especially in kitchens, can often need vacuuming every day.

Staying on top of vacuuming your flooring can not only help it look great, but it’ll also suck up dust and dirt that naturally settles on our floors. For carpeted floors, the longer you leave the dust, the more likely it is to embed itself deeper into the carpet fibers making it much harder to fully clean.

For more on this, head to our full feature on how often should you vacuum?

How to vacuum like an expert

Surely using a vacuum cleaner isn’t rocket science, right? However, many of us could be wasting effort by not vacuuming in the correct way. Whizzing around your floors as fast as you can is fine for a quick clean before guests come over, but it’s not going to be enough to clean your floors thoroughly each time.

When you want to give your flooring a deep clean, start at the edges of the room using a crevice tool. Work your way around the room slowly swiping the crevice tool in side-to-side motions so that it picks up the dust that has settled next to your baseboards.

Once you’ve done the edges of the room, use your vacuum’s normal floor head and work back and forth slowly across the room. Repeat the same motions in the opposite direction across the floor so that nothing is left behind.

We’ve got plenty more tips and handy hacks for making sure your vacuum performs as well as possible in our feature on how to vacuum like a pro.

Are cordless vacuums worth it?

Cordless vacuums have come a long way in recent years and these appliances can now rival the power and performance of premium upright and canister vacuums. With many models suitable for use as a handheld vacuum too, cordless vacuum cleaners now leave little to be desired and can be used as your sole vacuum, rather than as a handy extra to a bulkier upright model.

The downside, of course, is that you have to charge cordless vacuums but many are now available with a second battery, and with up to 60-minutes run time, it’s likely you’ll be able to make it around your home on a single charge (unless your house is very large).

If you’re still not sold, find out about the other types of vacuum cleaners or read our comparison of canister vs upright vacuums.

LG is making twice as many OLED TVs as last year

OLED TVs are experiencing something of a renaissance.

Last year, forecasts predicted a gloomy 2020 for the premium panel technology, with analytics firm Omdia expecting only 3.5 million OLED TV units to ship worldwide amid the fallout from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Those figures turned out to be more-or-less accurate, but the latest forecasts from Omdia predict a huge year-on-year increase in OLED TV production for 2021 – with South Korean giant tech LG leading the way.

According to new predictions, LG Display will produce 8.3 million OLED TVs this year, marking an 86% increase over the 4.5 million units the company produced in 2020.

LG's internal target for 2021 is reportedly 8 million units, with demand for its premium displays spiking in tandem with its expanded production capacity, particularly at its Guangzhou line in China.

The new forecast also suggests LG is likely to reduce its average panel size, which may increase its ability to ship more units – despite an expansion into 83-inch OLEDs this year.

LG has established itself as the foremost manufacturer of OLED TVs in recent years, with the company’s production figures increasing – a pandemic-hampered 2020 notwithstanding – year-on-year.

A small fish in a big pond

Even if Omdia’s lofty 8.3 million-unit prediction for the company comes to fruition in 2021, it would still represent only a small fraction of the estimated 280 million TV units expected to be shipped worldwide.

That’s because lower-spec displays like LCDs still dominate the TV market. Nowadays, you can pick up hundreds of competent TVs for very little money, with even 4K displays ranking among the best value TVs you can buy right now. As new display technology emerges, too, those cheap TVs are only going to get cheaper.

With that being said, LG recently shared its findings surrounding the environmental benefits of switching to OLED panels. The company suggests the display technology requires far less plastic than most other TV types, and uses less power than the likes of LCD and QLED screens, too.

Could that mean we’ll see old-gen displays like LCDs eventually phased out completely on environmental grounds? Only time will tell on that front, but it’s clear that OLED TVs, at least, are steaming back to popularity in 2021.

Silent Hill reboot rumors resurrected as Konami pairs with the perfect developer

It's perhaps the most often-rumored revival in all of gaming, but those holding out hope for a Silent Hill reboot get a shot in the arm from one of its faceless nurses today. Konami, the owner of the horror franchise, has agreed to a "strategic partnership" with a development team that is certain to set tongues wagging.

That developer is Bloober Team, the brains behind the very Silent Hill-esque The Medium next-gen title. Konami and Bloober Team will now set to work "jointly developing selected contents." Could Silent Hill be one such...contents?

"It is a historic day for me and the culmination of several years of our work," said Piotr Babieno, Bloober Team CEO, following the announcement.

"The fact that such a renowned company as Konami has decided to strategically cooperate with the Bloober Team means that we also joined the world leaders in gaming and became an equal partner for the leading players in this market."

The partnership will see both parties working across existing and new properties, but it's the obvious Silent Hill link we all care about right now.

Not-so-silent hills

There's been chatter around a Silent Hill revival for many years now, with the series festering since Konami's split with Hideo Kojima, long-time mastermind of the franchise. The much-lauded PT demo was supposed to be a precursor to a 'Silent Hills' game, before the two parties parted ways.

Bloober Team, on the other hand, has gone from strength to strength, building a trio of solid horror titles in Layers of Fear, Blair Witch and the recent The Medium. That last game, with its split-world design and soundtrack by Silent Hill's Akira Yamaoka, felt almost like a design test for a Silent Hill game in many respects. A port will soon see it added to the roster of upcoming new PS5 games, too.

It's not a done deal – Bloober Team could be working on anything under Konami's stewardship. And it's not a purchase – Bloober Team remains independent. But we can't wait to see what the developer could do if handed the reins to one of the most terrifying series in all of gaming.

WhatsApp is rolling out disappearing photos and videos to Android

If you’ve been wanting to send over an important photo or video that can self-destruct after a certain amount of time, soon it will be possible with WhatsApp now rolling out the feature to Android devices.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature has been in the works for a while, with Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart stating that it was coming to the app in due time, along with multiple device and iPad support.

In the last year, the usage of messaging apps has grown exponentially, with huge demand for privacy and even better features to help manage the many chats we’ve all become accustomed to.

With other apps such as Telegram already having these features for their users, pressure was on WhatsApp for these to also arrive for their users as well. With efforts to minimise their terribly mismanaged new privacy guidelines still, they’re doing all they can to retain and attract new users to their service.

Why is this feature useful?

Imagine if you need to send across an important photo that has some sensitive information. It could involve a sale and you may need to transfer money across to a bank. Instead of the photo being constantly backed up and stored in WhatsApp, the image can disappear once the recipient has looked at it, and then it will not be able to be viewed again.

WhatsApp disappearing message feature

For security reasons this is incredibly useful, and it’s a feature that users have been wanting for a long while on WhatsApp, especially as apps like Telegram have had this for over a year already.

With other features such as iPad support and multiple device support coming soon, there’s plenty to look forward to if you’re a heavy user of the app. While the feature is only available for Android devices, it’s only a matter of time before it arrives for iPhone as well.

Seven-time champion Serena Williams has had her dreams of that record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title foiled by slippery turf, while eight-time winner Roger Federer got the benefit of the same patch as his first-round opponent was forced to retire.

Perhaps the biggest story (for local fans, at least) is that Andy Murray came through a stern test in the first round. Can his broken body continue to produce miracles? Novak Djokovic is the favorite, of course,  and looks unstoppable. Though the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman will once again be hoping to thwart the Serb.

Predicting the women's championship is a fool's errand, and there's no shortage of contenders, including world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova and rising stars Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff.

It's going to be a very special tournament, and here's how you can live stream Wimbledon 2021 tennis action from wherever you are in the world.

How to watch a free Wimbledon live stream

The BBC goes all out with its coverage of the national treasure that is Wimbledon - and of course that means you can tune in for FREE.

You can catch the action on BBC One, BBC Two and the Red Button. If you're not in front of a TV, the BBC iPlayer streaming service is the way to tune in.

As a national broadcaster, it doesn't cost a penny to stream if you're located in the UK.

The BBC's coverage is extensive, and play at the All England Club typically starts at 11am BST, and extends through the day and deep into the evening.

If you're from the UK but not at home right now, you can still get your 2021 Wimbledon fix by using a VPN. We explain how below...

How to watch a Wimbledon live stream from outside your country

If you're abroad during Wimbledon, you'll likely find you're unable to access your domestic tennis coverage like you would at home. This isn't necessarily cause for alarm, but rather the result of geo-blocking - best understood as digital borders that restrict certain services and content to certain parts of the world.

Fortunately, there's a convenient way around this in the form of a VPN. This is a nifty bit of software that lets you swerve around these digital borders, thereby allowing you to globe trot and still access your preferred Wimbledon live stream. It's a completely legal workaround, very affordable, and super easy to use - allow us to explain more.

Where is Wimbledon 2021?

The annual tournament takes place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in south west London. The venue has held the Wimbledon Tennis Championships – the sport’s oldest tournament – since its inception in 1877.

How much money do you get if you win Wimbledon?

Since 2007 there’s been parity in what the winners of the Ladies' Singles and the winner of the Men's Singles each receive.

This year’s champions will both receive £1.7 million each – down from the £2.35 million the winners received in 2019.

The Men’s and Women’s Doubles champions will receive £480,000 per pair, while the Mixed Doubles champions receive £100,000 per pair.

In total there’s a bumper prize pot of £35 million (around $48 million) in total prize money to be shared amongst competitors taking part in this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

How many sets are there in Wimbledon tennis?

The Wimbledon Championships are played under Grand Slam tournament rules.

This means that the Men's Singles competition uses the best of five sets format, where the player who can clinch three sets first wins the game. For the Women’s Singles it’s a best-of-three format, whereby winning two sets ensures victory.

The Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles also use the best-of-three format at Wimbledon.

Who are the current Wimbledon champions?

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic is the current Men’s champion, having beaten Switzerland's Roger Federer in a five-set classic in the 2019.

The reigning Women's champion is Romania's Simona Halep, who stunned spectators by taking less than an hour to beat the USA's Serena Williams, hitting just three unforced errors in the entire match.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer

(Image credit: BEN STANSALL,GLYN KIRK/AFP/Getty Images)

Who are the favorites for Wimbledon 2021?

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is the favorite in the Men's Singles, having earned some of the biggest victories of his career at the French Open. Young rivals Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev are also being hotly tipped, as well as Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem.

The Women's Singles is more open, with Simona Halep facing competition from a wide pool of contenders, including world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, superstars in the making Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova, and of course Serena Williams.

How can I buy Wimbledon tickets?

Wimbledon usually attracts an attendance of around half a million people, but a degree of capacity control will be enforced this year, with at least the early parts of the tournament set to be played in front of a reduced crowd.

The process for buying tickets has also changed to meet Covid safety precautions, with purchases only open to fans based in the UK who register with myWimbledon, and tickets limited to a maximum of two people, and only one day of the event.

Attendees are also required to show proof of Covid status upon entry.

Battlefield 2042 trailers

Gameplay trailer
EA Dice finally gave us a look at Battlefield 2042's gameplay in action during Microsoft and Bethesda's joint E3 2021 conference. The trailer gives us a look at the game's Hourglass map, set in Egypt.

The gameplay trailer shows tanks shooting down helicopters, which unceremoniously collapse in a heap of flames among the sandy dunes, while soldiers crawl all over the map like well-armored ants. The trailer also gives us a look at Hourglass’ neon-clad skyscrapers, with elevators allowing players to reach the top floor - and we’re hoping all the floors in between, though that wasn’t shown. Once players reach the top of these skyscrapers, they can zipline across to other rooftops or utilize their wingsuit to soar from their new vantage point.

The trailer also gives us a look at Battlefield 2042’s dynamic weather in action, which is bound to cause complete mayhem. The footage shows a tornado ripping through the Hourglass map, causing utter devastation, but these randomly generated world occurrences can either be a boon or bane for players. While you can choose to avoid the tornado - as much as possible - by seeking refuge in skyscrapers, you can also choose to utilize it to your advantage and devastate your enemies. Check out the trailer below:

Battlefield 2042 reveal trailer
The first official trailer for Battlefield 2042 was shown during the Battlefield reveal on June 9. The trailer gives us our first proper look at Battlefield 2042 and it, frankly, looks like it will be an epic affair featuring dynamic weather, huge battles and even robot dogs? Check it out below:

EA Play 2020
The new Battlefield was featured in a tech trailer during EA Play 2020, though we didn't know much about it back then. In the trailer, we only caught a glimpse of some "work in progress" footage, which showed facial animations and a large number of soldiers running into battle.

From the brief glimpses we saw, it looks like facial animations will be more realistic than previously and that we're going to see battlefields getting even larger this time round (the latter has been confirmed since).

"We are creating epic battles at a scale and fidelity unlike anything you've experienced before", EA's chief studios officer Laura Miele said during the video. Check it out for yourself below, at the 44-minute mark:

Battlefield 2042 setting

Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 is set in a world that is on the brink of complete devastation. Food, energy and water shortages have led to the “greatest refugee crisis in human history”, following the failure of many of the world’s nations. Among these refugees are the “Non-Patriated” (also known as the No-Pats), made up of families, farmers, engineers and soldiers, who have been left without a nation to call their own.

The last two superpowers that remain are the United States and Russia, who are battling it out for control of the globe’s last remaining resources. In order to survive, Non-Pat Specialists join both sides so that, when the final bullet is fired, they have “a seat at the table”. Players will take on the role of one of these Non-Pat Specialists.

EA DICE has called Battlefield 2042 a “true evolution” of the Battlefield franchise.

Battlefield 2042 multiplayer modes

Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 will have three “distinct, standout multiplayer experiences” according to EA DICE, but Battle Royale isn’t one of them.

The first of these multiplayer experiences is All-Out War, which is described as the next-generation of the Conquest and Breakthrough modes we have seen in the series before. This mode features huge 128-player maps on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X, while PS4 and Xbox One players will have 64-player versions of these maps, which have been scaled down for the last-gen consoles but are still larger than in previous entries (read on for more information on these maps). EA DICE has assured players “that gameplay, events and moments will all be felt for Battlefield players on whatever platform they play on”.

Conquest mode is the “classic all-out war experience” and will see players fighting over a massive space. According to EA DICE, this mode has a lot of varied pacing, with players choosing where to go and how to fight. EA DICE says that Conquest will feature moments with lots of players, making combat a bit chaotic, while other moments will be less chaotic and more personal.

Breakthrough, on the other hand, is a more guided experience. This mode sees one side attacking and the other defending, in an attempt to capture areas, and will see both sides coming head-to-head in massive clashes.

Battlefield 2042

In addition to All-Out War, Battlefield 2042 will feature two other multiplayer experiences. The second of these is Hazard Zone, an “all-new, high-stakes, squad-based game-type for the Battlefield franchise”. EA DICE has emphasized that this is not a battle royale mode, instead, it’s apparently a “modern take on the multiplayer experience that is distinctly DICE but very different from All-Out Warfare’s Conquest or Breakthrough modes”. We’re due to find out about this mode in the coming months.

The third multiplayer experience is set to be announced at EA Play on July 22. This experience is being developed by DICE LA and will be another completely new mode for the franchise. EA DICE has called this third experience “a love letter to Battlefield fans and one that long-time players will feel right at home with”.

Prominent leaker Tom Henderson, who has a good track record of accurate leaks, has said this third multiplayer experience is called the 'Battlefield Hub' and will allow players to play remastered versions of classic Battlefield maps but we won't know for sure until EA DICE reveals the mode itself.

EA DICE also revealed that the new Battlefield game will have a battle pass for each season that will include a free and premium tier - though the premium tier will apparently only offer cosmetic items and never maps.

According to the developer, each season will push the world’s narrative forward and introduce new content. Battlefield 2042 is set to have four seasons in its first year - with four new Specialists to be introduced as well as new locations.

Battlefield 2042 maps

Battlefield 2042's All Out War multiplayer experience will launch with seven maps. Due to the size of these maps, each is broken into distinct sectors, with multiple objectives within those sectors which are arranged in clusters. Clusters are areas where objects and objectives are focused in one space, such as a village, stadium or oil platform. These sectors change how you take control of areas, with securing a sector requiring completing all the objectives within that sector.

Check them out below:

Battlefield 2042

Kaleidoscope (Image credit: EA DICE)

Kaleidoscope
Set in Songdo, South Korea, this will see you clashing to control a disinformation hub. This map features huge skyscrapers with multiple floors, canals outside with amphibious vehicles, a TV station, and ziplines allowing you to traverse across rooftops.

Battlefield 2042

Manifest (Image credit: EA DICE)

Manifest
Set in Branai Island, Singapore, players will fight for access to supply lines. This map features a massive container yard and automated cranes which pick up and move containers as you play. Players can also access ships that contain capture points. Combat in this map apparently gets “intense”.

Battlefield 2042

Orbital (Image credit: EA DICE)

Orbital
Set in Kourou, French Guiana, this map sees you battling over a rocket launch site as a “controversial space launch becomes a race against time”. This map sees a lot of action around the rocket launch and surrounding area, and the rocket can even take off - but apparently, it doesn’t always go as planned...

Battlefield 2042

Discarded
Set in Alang, India, this map sees factions fighting to secure rogue nuclear assets. There are huge stranded ships dotted around this map, which were stranded due to the changing water levels, including one called ‘Colossus’ which hides a submarine inside.

Battlefield 2042

Renewal (Image credit: EA DICE)

Renewal
Set in the Eastern Desert, Egypt, Renewal sees players fighting for a groundbreaking agriculture technology center in the Egyptian Desert. This is a map of two halves: one side lush and green and the other desert wasteland.

Battlefield 2042

Hourglass
Set in Doha, Qatar, Hourglass is a “city lost in time” and sees players fighting for a lost convoy. One of the larger maps, this map features a neon city, with skyscrapers that light up as massive sandstorms pass through, a stadium overrun by sand, and a huge highway intersection where the convoy has come to stop.

Battlefield 2042

Breakaway
Set in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica, Breakaway is Battlefield 2042’s largest map at 5.9km2. This map sees players fighting over oil and gas reserves, and features exploding silos and distinct combat areas.

Battlefield 2042 Specialists

Players will take on the role of Specialists in Battlefield 2042, soldiers with their own unique Special Trait and Speciality, but with fully customizable loadouts - so you can use any weapon.

Specialties can take the form of a grappling hook, which lets Assault Specialists zip to higher spots; an OV-P Recon Drone, which allows Recon Specialists to pinpoint targets; or a S21 Syrette Pistol, allowing Support Specialists to fire health vials at those who need them.

The new Battlefield will launch with 10 Specialists, with each falling under a traditional class of either Engineer, Assault, Support or Recon. So far, we know of four Specialists:

Pyotr “Boris” Guskovsky
Place of Birth: Russia
Class: Engineer
Specialty: SG-36 Sentry Gun
Trait: Sentry Operator

Specialists can change their weapon configuration on the go thanks to Battlefield 2042’s new ‘Plus System’ - which allows you to change your scope, undertype, barrel and ammo type on the move. Players will also have access to a wingsuit so they can glide off tall structures in maps.

Players will also get access to new weapons including an M5A3, K30 and AV9. In addition, vehicles will play a big role in this game, with players able to access tanks, fighter jets, helicopters and more - which can be requested at any time to any location. According to EA DICE, vehicles in Battlefield 2042 are a “platform for great team play”. Each vehicle seat has a vital role to play, so having more players in your vehicle makes it a more efficient weapon.

Battlefield 2042 gameplay

Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 is set to lean into the sandbox experience more than any other entry in the series. Maps have dynamic weather which will see players avoiding (or utilizing) the likes of tornadoes and sandstorms. In addition, Battlefield 2042 features destructible environments and terrain, ground deformation and levolution, while there will also be “smaller ways” to interact with the world including raising or lowering bollards and bridges to prevent vehicles from passing.

In addition, a nice quality-of-life feature means that Specialists can change their weapon configuration on the go thanks to Battlefield 2042’s new ‘Plus System’ - which allows you to change your scope, undertype, barrel and ammo type on the move. Players will also have access to a wingsuit so they can glide off tall structures in maps.

For those who aren’t comfortable fighting against real players, or want to get to grips with Battlefield before jumping into these matches, there is the ability to play this multiplayer experience against and with AI players. You’ll also be able to play with a mix of real-life and AI players. These AI players will reportedly scale based on a player’s skill and AI battles will contribute to a player's overall progress.

Battlefield 2042: technical playtest

Battlefield 2042

If you want to get your hands on Battlefield 2042 ahead of its October release then you’re in luck. EA DICE is set to host a technical playtest in July for those who have been identified as series veterans (US and Europe only). These players will be invited to play in a closed environment under NDA.

Following this, but before launch, those who have pre-ordered Battlefield 2042 will receive early access to an open beta. Details on how this open beta will work haven't been shared yet.

Battlefield 2042 news

We're rounded up all the biggest news about Battlefield 2042 below:

Will support DLSS and Nvidia reflex tech
Battlefield 2042 will support Nvidia DLSS technology. DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to intelligently upscale images, effectively allowing you to play games at higher resolutions, and with more intensive graphical effects, without the performance hit of running at native resolutions.

Not only are Battlefield games fast-paced, but they are often graphical showcases as well, and DLSS could work really well, in this case, to provide seriously impressive graphics, while keeping everything running smoothly. DLSS relies on the Tensor Cores that are only found in Nvidia RTX graphics cards, which means the feature isn’t available on AMD cards, or older Nvidia GTX GPUs (although AMD has finally released its own answer to DLSS, FidelityFX Super Resolution.

Battlefield 2042 is also getting Nvidia Reflex technology as well, which aims at reducing latency – so the time it takes for you to move your mouse or press a keyboard key, and the game registering it should be noticeably reduced.

This will lead to a far more responsive game, and a hectic multiplayer title like Battlefield 2042 could really benefit from it.

Bot invasion
When Battlefield 2042 launches, players on Xbox Series X, PS5 and PC will be able to play in servers with up to 128 players at once. However, players might not always be facing off against humans in these matches.

Speaking to The Verge, EA explained that AI bots will come into play and that up to 64 'AI soldiers' could be used to fill up empty lobbies depending on factors like your region, platform and the time of day. Of course, human players will take priority so if you’re playing at busy times it’s unlikely you’ll be besieged by bots.

Last-gen players are even less likely to encounter bots as, while bots will be used to fill their servers too, the max lobby size is just 64 on older consoles and many Battlefield 2042 players are likely to be using last-gen hardware thanks to ongoing next-gen shortages.

EA Play
EA Dice is set to unveil Battlefield 2042's third multiplayer experience during the EA Play event on July 22. The pre-show will start at 10am PT/ 6pm BST/ 1pm ET on July 22 and will be followed by the main showcase.

Battlefield Hub
According to notable leaker Tom Henderson (via VGC), Battlefield 2042's third multiplayer experience is called the 'Battlefield hub' and will allow players to play remastered versions of classic Battlefield maps.

"Battlefield Hub is going to contain remasters of old maps from old Battlefield titles,” Henderson says in a video. “It’s going to be a map on the Battlefield 2042 engine and it's going to run on that engine, so the movement and stuff like that is going to be exactly the same. However, you’re essentially playing on a remastered map with different weapons and vehicles from past Battlefield titles."

According to Henderson, the major of these maps will be 64-players only, though the Battlefield Hub will support 128-player maps on next-gen consoles and PC. "It just depends on the map," Henderson says. This suggests we could see some of the bigger classic Battlefield maps supporting 128 players.

Henderson also claimed that the Battlefield Hub is going to be "the ultimate sandbox experience" and is touted to be the “fun” game mode when it comes to Battlefield 2042. According to Henderson's sources, the Battlefield hub isn't necessarily going to be a competitive or balanced experience, with the focus being on fun instead. Henderson also claims that this mode won't feature classes, but instead will feature Battlefield 2042's Specialists instead.

Battlefield 2042 briefing
EA DICE held a Battlefield 2042 briefing on June 15 which saw the developer explaining further details on the new Battlefield, following the gameplay reveal on June 13. You can watch the full video on Twitch.

No Battle Royale plans
EA DICE confirmed during a virtual preview of Battlefield 2042 that the developer has no plans to include a Battle Royale mode at launch.

EA recruits Call of Duty exec
EA has recruited a former Call of Duty exec to help grow the Battlefield series. The company recently announced it has hired former Call of Duty General Manager, Byron Beede, as the General Manager and Senior Vice President on the Battlefield (via IGN). With EA saying that the hire "signals a strategic, long-term commitment to the growth of the franchise".

But it's Beede's experience that is most interesting. Beede has previously been the General Manager of both the Call of Duty and Destiny franchises, most notably worked on the launch of Call of Duty's live service offering, Call of Duty Mobile and Call of Duty: Warzone

While Beede is set to focus primarily on the future of the Battlefield franchise, his knowledge of live service games will likely be a huge boon to Battlefield 2042.
